Working the claim

  1. Read your policy's deductible and what's covered (flood is usually a separate policy through NFIP or private insurers).
  2. Meet the adjuster; walk them through all damage.
  3. Get your own written repair estimate from a licensed contractor.
  4. Compare the insurer's scope line-by-line with your contractor's estimate.
  5. Ask questions in writing if something's missing.
  6. If you disagree, ask about your policy's appeal/appraisal process or contact your state insurance department (Arizona: Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions).

Storm-chaser red flags (FTC)

  • Door-to-door crews offering to start today
  • Upfront payment or cash demands
  • Offers to 'cover' your deductible
  • Asking you to sign over your insurance check or sign documents you don't understand
  • No local address or license

Paying for repairs

Insurance checks often include your mortgage company's name and may be released in stages. Pay the contractor as work is completed - never the whole claim up front.
