Storm Damage & Insurance Claim Basics
What to do after a storm or leak: safety, photos, calling your insurer, avoiding storm chasers and choosing a contractor for the repair.
Working the claim
- Read your policy's deductible and what's covered (flood is usually a separate policy through NFIP or private insurers).
- Meet the adjuster; walk them through all damage.
- Get your own written repair estimate from a licensed contractor.
- Compare the insurer's scope line-by-line with your contractor's estimate.
- Ask questions in writing if something's missing.
- If you disagree, ask about your policy's appeal/appraisal process or contact your state insurance department (Arizona: Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions).
Storm-chaser red flags (FTC)
- Door-to-door crews offering to start today
- Upfront payment or cash demands
- Offers to 'cover' your deductible
- Asking you to sign over your insurance check or sign documents you don't understand
- No local address or license
Paying for repairs
Insurance checks often include your mortgage company's name and may be released in stages. Pay the contractor as work is completed - never the whole claim up front.
